Is a question our stylists get asked every day. How to shampoo your hair correctly isn’t a closely guarded industry secret… It just takes a little practice, and also trial and error.
Did you know that washing your hair every day can actually damage it? That’s because shampooing, as well as removing dirt, also strips your hair’s natural oils. This causes hair to be more fragile and dry, which can then lead to breakage. So how often is best? Is now the time to break the daily wash cycle?
A good shampoo is simple. Use a small amount – less than the size of a 50p in your palm – and rub hands together. Then, scrub your hair firmly but gently until the shampoo lathers. Focus on the roots and the scalp, rather than the ends, to minimise tangling. If you work up a good enough lather, nice and foamy, there’s no need to repeat. If your hair was quite dirty and you didn’t, then start from the beginning!
If your hair is ‘thin’ or very fine, if you exercise daily, or if you tend to use a lot of product such as a mousse or serum, you may still want to shampoo daily. If you do, or if you simply can’t bear the thought of skipping a wash, ensure that you’re using a very gentle shampoo. Look for a light, sulfate-free shampoo to lessen the chance of breakage, or ask your stylist for help choosing.
Paul Mitchell products are among some of the most natural hair products you can buy, with common ingredients including tea tree oil, carrot extract and jojoba, so you’re already in the right place by choosing to buy a professional-grade shampoo from your hairdresser. Trying a number of different shampoos is the best way to find one that suits your hair type.
Don’t forget, dry shampoo can be great for buying you an extra day between washes. Just be sure to give your scalp a good scrub when you’re washing it out.
If you hair is thick and/or curly, shampooing every 2-3 days is plenty! These textures tend to soak up their natural oils more, so it’s not as noticeable if you go a few extra days without a shampoo. In fact, these oils act as a natural moisturiser and there are ways you can use it to your advantage. You can try combing the oil from your roots and scalp, all the way down the length of your hair to get the benefits on those dryer ends.
The secret is… There is no secret! Most importantly, do what feels right for you. If your hair looks or feels too oily, wash it! Stock up on healthier hair care that will take care of your hair at your own pace, and don’t be afraid to try a number of different types of shampoo to see what works best for your and your hair.
